Safe reporting project in
Ghent
Context
Federal laws dictate that the police or prosecutor’s office are obliged to report migrants in an irregular residence situation to the foreign affairs service. Therefore, a victim or witness who reports a crime against a migrant in an irregular residence situation runs the risk of being locked up or given the order to leave the country. At local level, no good practice exists to tackle this issue.
Objectives
Ghent will deliver a report including desk research executed by the University of Ghent mapping thresholds and existing legislation regarding the administrative-juridical process of reporting. The city of Ghent will raise awareness on the topic targeting policy makers and through trainings targeting professionals.
